Mr Andrew Drakeley

Consultant Gynaecologist & Subspecialist in Reproductive Medicine

Andrew Drakeley was educated at the Liverpool Blue Coat School and graduated from Liverpool University in 1994, choosing to specialise in Obstetrics & Gynaecology. In 1996, Andrew undertook a research post investigating recurrent pregnancy loss and the menopause, being awarded his MD doctorate in 2004. In 1997, he worked for 6 months at Coronation Hospital, Johannesburg and then for 8 months at Groote Schuur Hospital, Cape Town, South Africa as an Obstetric & Gynaecology Registrar.

 

Andrew returned to the Mersey Obstetrics & Gynaecology rotation in 1998 completing his MRCOG specialty qualification in 1999. From 2002 to 2005, Andrew worked as a Subspecialty Fellow at the Hewitt Centre for Reproductive Medicine, Liverpool, including sabbaticals to Sydney & Melbourne, Australia to increase his expertise in laparoscopic surgery & assisted conception. Andrew was also elected to represent trainee doctors to the Councils of the Royal College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists and the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges.

 

He is an invited referee for the British Journal of Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Human Reproduction, Human Reproduction Update,  the Lancet & the British Medical Journal. He is a reviewer and co-author for the Cochrane review Groups of Pregnancy & Childbirth and Menstrual Disorders and Subfertility, and has delivered over 50 lectures and published widely. He has co-written the Royal College National Guideline on the management of the Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome and was elected the North West of England Members representative to the RCOG Council from 2006 to 2009.

 

Andrew was awarded his Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training in Obstetrics & Gynaecology and also Subspecialty Accreditation in Reproductive Medicine in January 2005 and is a substantive Consultant Gynaecologist and Subspecialist in Reproductive Medicine at the Liverpool Women's NHS Foundation Trust and practices assisted conception at the Hewitt Fertility Centre.

 

Andrew is the regional lead Clinician for egg donation, fertility preservation, viral discordancy, egg sharing and recently introduced surrogacy treatment to Liverpool.

 

From 2012, Andrew has been the Chairman of the British Medical Association’s O&G subcommittee and is currently the specialty lead for Obstetrics & Gynaecology. In 2013, Andrew became Chairman of the Medical Staff Committee of the Liverpool Women’s and also the Consultant in Charge of the Hewitt Fertility Centre.
