Mr Matthew Kent
Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon
Mr Kent is a consultant orthopaedic surgeon at the Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen University Hospitals NHS Trust. He has specialist experience in the area of the shoulder and elbow surgery with a focus trauma as well as joint replacement and arthroscopic (keyhole) surgery.
Mr Kent qualified in 1999 from Liverpool University. After completing his basic surgical training in the Merseyside region he spent a year in New Zealand. On return to the UK he completed his specialist orthopaedic training in Cambridge. From an early stage Mr. Kent focused his training on shoulder and Elbow surgery and completed two specialist fellowships, one in Norwich and the other in Liverpool. These focused on arthroscopic surgery and elbow disorders. He was appointed as a consultant in 2011. In addition he has visited a number of renowned centers in the UK and Europe to gain further experience. In 2013 he was awarded the prestigious travelling fellowship from the British Elbow and Shoulder Society allowing him to visit multiple centres in the USA focussing on the treatment of complex and revision shoulder and elbow arthroplasty ‘joint replacement’.
Mr Kent has been actively involved with research and is currently the clinical research lead for upper limb surgery at the Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen Hospitals. As part of his training he completed an MsC in Orthopaedic Engineering at Cardiff university producing research and a thesis on upper limb biomechanics. Current areas of research interest include the use of shoulder replacement in trauma, biomechanics of shoulder replacement and ACJ stabilisation.
Mr Kent is actively involved with teaching and has been invited to speak at a number of national courses. He is currently president of the north-west upper limb group which provides a forum for shoulder and elbow surgeons, as well as therapists, from the northwest to share expertise.
Mr Kent aims to provide a personalised service with treatment focused on the individual’s needs and expectations. Mr. Kent maintains close relations with the treating therapists in order to maximize coordination of care and outcomes.
Mr Kent only treats Shoulder and Elbow conditions and hence has wide experience of all conditions affecting these two joints and their surrounding tissues. He has undergone specialist training in key hole ‘arthroscopic’ surgery alongside specialist training in Shoulder and Elbow replacement type of surgery. He has developed a sub specialist interest in complex and revision Shoulder and Elbow replacements.
