Laparoscopic Gastric Band

Gastric banding is a procedure that restricts your food intake. The gastric band creates a small pouch at the top of the stomach and a narrow opening through which food passes slowly into the lower stomach.

Attached to the band is a port site which is often placed on the breastbone. The band is usually inserted deflated and gradually inflated in outpatients. It may take a few inflations before you start to lose weight, different people require different levels of inflation before they start to achieve gradual weight loss.

Following the procedure it is important to alter your eating habits to prevent side effects (such as bloating) and help you maximise your weight loss. Gastric Banding restricts the amount of food you can eat but your body still absorbs food in the same way and fluids pass through the band freely, therefore it is important to avoid high calorie drinks and foods. The process is not easy but if you have a strong desire to change then this procedure will help.

It is however vitally important to discuss all weight loss surgery options with your consultant to gain an understanding of the risks and benefits involved.

If you are paying for your own treatment all costs will be discussed and explained prior to any treatment taking place. This will be confirmed in writing along with any surgeon fees, anaesthetist fees and hospital charges prior to admission.
