Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass

The gastric bypass is one of the most common surgeries used to address weight control.

During the operation a large section of the stomach is stapled off to reduce the amount of consumption. In simple terms the patient cannot eat as much food as they could before surgery as the remaining pouch will only store a few ounces at a time.

The surgery is reliable and has achieved excellent results in patients.

As with any weight loss surgery it is important to address any underlying reasons for weight gain as these may still be applicable after the surgery. The consultant will discuss with each patient in detail how lifestyle changes and dietary habits must also be strongly considered to allow the surgery to work to maximum effect with long term weight control.

The procedure may cause some discomfort in the days following surgery with over the counter painkillers often being sufficient.

Your surgery will be performed under a general anaesthetic and will require you to stay in hospital for a few days.

Regular light exercise must be maintained to aid the healing process but strenuous exercise must be avoided until the surgery has settled and no pain is being experienced.

This type of surgery is not for everyone and all options will be discuss prior to any procedure.

If you are paying for your own treatment all costs will be discussed and explained prior to any treatment taking place. This will be confirmed in writing along with any surgeon fees, anaesthetist fees and hospital charges prior to admission.
