Shoulder Arthroscopy

Otherwise known as 'keyhole surgery', a shoulder arthroscopy enables your surgeon to be able to see inside of the shoulder with the minimum trauma to the patient.

The arthroscopy allows your surgeon to not only see what internal damage there is by use of a small camera but also allows work to be carried out with the use of specialised medical instruments.

For many problems within the shoulder, surgery is the only option. CT or MRI scans can be first carried out to reveal the issue however in many cases an athroscopy is also required to correct the problem.

The procedure will be performed under general anaesthetic and will take approximately 45 minutes depending on the work your surgeon has to compete once the extent of the injury is known.

Small incisions will be made by your surgeon around the shoulder joint allowing good vision of the entire area. A small camera will then be placed into one of the cuts to enable the surgeon to accurately diagnose and treat the problem.

The surgical instruments will also be placed into the cuts if so required for any internal repairs to be carried out. We advise our patients to discuss any questions they may have with their consultant prior to the procedure.

You may be allowed home on the same day as the operation however we advise for a family member or friend to collect you from the hospital.

It can take as long as three months to return to normal activity. The physiotherapy team will give each patient exercises to complete and will be on hand throughout the rehabilitation period should further advice be needed.

You may return to work as and when you feel fit and regular exercise should be maintained to return to fitness as soon as possible.

This procedure will normally be covered by your medical insurance policy but patients are advised to check with their provider prior to any treatment.

If you are paying for your own treatment all costs will be discussed and explained prior to any treatment taking place. This will be confirmed in writing along with any surgeon fees, anaesthetist fees and hospital charges prior to admission.
