Sleep Studies

Sleep studies are the area of medicine that deal with disorders such as inability to sleep, heavy snoring and tiredness throughout the day.

Sleep disorders are not only a nuisance but they can also cause problems in the ability to study or work, whilst in some cases can lead to high blood pressure and heart disease.

If there is a concern about sleep disorders, a sleep study carried out by The Sefton Suite can determine the best course of action.

Sleep Apnoea

Sleep Apnoea is a disorder that interrupts sleep during the night where breathing becomes difficult due to a reduction in the airflow despite efforts being made by the respiratory system to work correctly. This is caused by relaxation in the muscle at the back of the throat and upper airway.

This can cause tiredness and difficult on-going sleep patterns.

In some cases simple changes of lifestyle and diet can help solve the problem and these will be discussed with the consultant prior to any treatment, if the solution can be found in these simple changes then there may be no need for further tests and treatments.

If this is not the case then your consultant would at other methods to solve the problem. One possible treatment would be the use of Continuous Positive Airways Pressure (CPAP) which will help support the breathing throughout the night. This will also cause a significant reduction in snoring.

Sleep studies are specifically used to measure airflow, snoring levels, oxygen levels, muscle effort and heart rate throughout the night.

Your consultant will then discuss the options based on the full set of results. It is important to discuss in detail any questions you may have that may arise from the results.

This procedure will normally be covered by the medical insurance policy but patients are advised to check with the provider prior to any treatment.

If you are paying for your own treatment all costs will be discussed and explained prior to any treatment taking place. This will be confirmed in writing along with any surgeon fees, anaesthetist fees and hospital charges prior to admission.
