Mr Michael McNicholas

Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon

Mr Mike McNicholas is a Consultant Knee & Trauma Surgeon in the University Hospital Aintree Teaching Hospital Major Trauma Centre. Appointed in January 2013, he offers a regional knee reconstruction service for patients in Cheshire and Merseyside and has one of the most extensive experiences of multiple ligament reconstruction in the UK.

 

He has been an Honorary Professor in the Directorate of Sport at the University of Salford since 2006, in recognition of research and teaching on the rehabilitation of injured sportsmen and women.

 

After completing Knee Fellowships in Edinburgh, Switzerland, America and Japan he was appointed as a Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic surgeon in Warrington Hospital in 2001 specialising in knee surgery since then. He is a founder member of the 20/20 group which is a national group of specialist soft tissue surgeons. He qualified from the Universities of St Andrews (BSc, 1986), Manchester (MB, ChB, 1989) and Dundee (MD, 2000) His Orthopaedic training was in Dundee, and Edinburgh(FRCSEd Tr & Orth, 2000).

 

He is regularly invited to teach at national and international meetings, training juniors and other Consultants on arthroscopic surgery, ligament reconstruction of the knee and knee replacement and trauma surgery. He was nominated as Trainer of the Year in 2012 by the Mersey Regional Training Rotation and is on The Royal College of Surgeons Train the Trainer Faculty.

 

He has a particular interest in the 'young' arthritic knee and the evolving joint preservation surgery for these patients who wish to maintain a high level of activity. He is the UK Chief Investigator in the GOAL Trial, comparing the outcomes of Kinespring treatment with those of High Tibial Osteotomy. He has participated in a number of international studies comparing different techniques of articular cartilage resurfacing, the Biopoly, ACTIVE, and SUMMIT trials. Mr McNicholas has published widely on knee Surgery as well as trauma surgery. His research has won a number of awards including the Richard O’Connor Research Award, the highest research prize of the Arthroscopy Association of North America for his work on the outcome of meniscus surgery. He is also interested in the outcome of all knee surgical procedures and has established databases of proven outcome scores.

 

Sport has played a significant role in his life and Mr McNicholas was a St Andrews University Blue in Swimming and Waterpolo and has also played Rugby, Volleyball and Football. Given his background, he has a keen interest in sports knee injuries and their management for all levels of players from Premiership footballers and elite athletes to those who just want to be able to have a kick-about in the garden with their kids. He has insurance allowing treatment of professional sports men and women. His continued interest in sports medicine has been recognised by election as a Fellow of the Faculty of Sport and Exercise Medicine of the Royal College of Surgeons of lreland.
