Mr Sankalap Tandon

Mr Sank Tandon is a consultant surgeon specialising in adult ENT, Head and Neck & Thyroid Surgery. He has been in post since September 2009 at Aintree University Hospital, Liverpool University Hospitals Group. He has been trained to the highest standards completing specialist registrar training with CCT in ENT, followed by subspecialty training (including a head and neck fellowship) in benign and malignant head and neck & thyroid cancer. His day-to-day practice is managing thyroid, laryngeal, oropharyngeal and salivary pathologies. His operative workload includes trans-oral laser micro-surgery, with experience gained in one of the UK’s highest turnover head and neck laser units.

He is a previous clinical director for the Liverpool University Hospital Foundation Trust ENT department between 2019 – 2022, leading the department through the Covid-19 pandemic and ensuring that delivery of cancer services was not compromised during this time. He also led the ENT service development as part of merger of the two largest regional academic hospitals in Merseyside, into of one of the biggest NHS trusts in the UK. He is a previous Chair of the Merseyside and Cheshire Thyroid Cancer multi-disciplinary team (tumour board).

He has published extensively in his field and has a significant portfolio of research and audit as well as completing a postgraduate MD degree, awarded from the University of Liverpool in 2014.

He has a significant interest in training and education, especially in simulation training. He is the out-going course director for a unique head and neck and ENT simulation-training course, the first of its’ kind in the UK, schooling trainees in crew resource management and clinical & human factors aspects of modern medicine. He is a consultant clinical trainer for the trust’s simulation team, teaching human-factors training and is the Training Programme Director for Simulation, Robotic and Cadaveric Dissection Training for the Northwest Deanery School of Surgery, covering all surgical specialities.

Mr Sankalap Tandon is a Consultant ENT Surgeon specialising in adult ear, nose and throat (ENT or otolaryngology), head and neck surgery, and thyroid surgery. He has been in post at Aintree University Hospital since 2009, which is part of the Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

He is a UK graduate from the University of Nottingham in 1998. He completed specialist ENT surgical training in the UK to the highest standards achieving CCT in otolaryngology, followed by subspecialty training in head and neck surgery, with a focus on both benign and malignant disease of the head and neck and thyroid.

His clinical practice includes the management of thyroid disorders, laryngeal and oropharyngeal pathology, and salivary gland disease. He has particular expertise in advanced surgical techniques, including transoral laser microsurgery, developed through experience in a high-volume UK head and neck cancer centre.

Mr Tandon previously served as Clinical Director for the ENT department at Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust from 2019 to 2022, where he led service delivery through the COVID-19 pandemic and contributed to maintaining continuity of cancer care services. He also played a key role in the merger and development of ENT services across major regional hospitals in Merseyside.

He has held leadership positions in multidisciplinary thyroid cancer care, including chairing the Merseyside and Cheshire Thyroid Cancer multidisciplinary team. His academic contributions include a Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree from the University of Liverpool and an extensive portfolio of research publications.

He has a significant interest in training and education, especially in simulation training.
