Laryngoscopy
A Laryngoscopy is an examination used by your consultant to see deep into your throat using a fibre-optic scope (laryngoscope).
A felxible scope is used as it shows the throat better and also is more comfortable for the patient. Use of a scope allows the consultant easy access to detect issues such as:
The consultant will, on certain occasions, use a rigid laryngoscope to remove foreign objects from the throat or to collect tissue samples from the throat. This procedure may also be used to detect cancer of the voice box.
Flexible laryngoscopy is usually performed under a local anaesthetic with rigid laryngoscopy being under a general anaesthetic and in both cases we advise that you have a family member or friend to collect you from the hospital.
Most patients will be allowed home the day of or the day after the procedure. We advise that you are away from work for a period of one week following the operation.
Please do discuss any questions you may have with your consultant prior to the procedure.
This procedure will normally be covered by the medical insurance policy but patients are advised to check with the provider prior to any treatment.
If you are paying for your own treatment all costs will be discussed and explained prior to any treatment taking place. This will be confirmed in writing along with any surgeon fees, anaesthetist fees and hospital charges prior to admission.
