Lumbar Laminectomy
A lumbar laminectomy is commonly known as an open decompression and usually performed to alleviate pain caused by neural impingement that can result from lumbar slinal stenosis.
With most patients being in their latter years, the cause of spinal stenosis is the degenerative changes that result in enlargement of the facet joints in the spine.
The enlarged joints then in turn cause pressure on the nerves around the spine. It is this pressure that a laminectomy can relieve.
The procedure is designed to remove a small part of the bone over the root of the nerve or disc material under the root of the nerve to supply more space to the nerve rrot to aid a better healing environment.
This procedure will normally be covered by the medical insurance policy but patients are advised to check with the provider prior to any treatment.
If you are paying for your own treatment all costs will be discussed and explained prior to any treatment taking place. This will be confirmed in writing along with any surgeon fees, anaesthetist fees and hospital charges prior to admission.
