Lumbar Microdiscectomy
In a microdiscectomy or alternatively microdecompression spine surgery, a small portion of the bone over the root of the nerve or disc material from under the root of the nerve is removed to relieve impingement and supply more room for the nerve to heal.
Our consultants will discuss with you the reasons but a microdiscectomy is usually performed for a herniated lumbar disc but is actually more effective for treating leg pain than lower back pain.
If the root of the nerve becomes impinged then substantial leg pain can be felt which can lead to weakness and numbness in the area.
With a microdiscectomy you can expect to feel immediate pain relief.
This procedure will normally be covered by the medical insurance policy but patients are advised to check with the provider prior to any treatment.
If you are paying for your own treatment all costs will be discussed and explained prior to any treatment taking place. This will be confirmed in writing along with any surgeon fees, anaesthetist fees and hospital charges prior to admission.
