An allergy is a condition caused by a hypersensitivity of the immune system to something in the environment. These conditions include hay fever, food reactions, dermatitis, asthma and anaphylaxis. Symptoms may include red eyes, an itchy rash, runny nose, shortness of breath or swelling of the skin and in some cases, joint pains.
Common allergens include pollens, foods and pet exposure. In response to an allergen, certain antibodies (IgE), trigger the release of inflammatory chemicals known as histamine. Diagnosis is typically based on a person’s medical history and further testing is useful in detecting the offending cause.
Screening for allergens offers the possibility of effective treatment and avoidance of the offending triggers.
