An apicoectomy involves the surgical removal of the tip of the root of an infected tooth.

Infected teeth can become very painful and this operation will remove all the pain and problem. An incision is initially made in the gum tissue around the affected area to expose the bone and surrounding inflamed tissues at which time the root tip and affected tissue are removed.

A filling will replace the root end to prevent any further infection. The bone will then naturally heal around the root over a period of months before returning to full function.

This procedure will involve a local anaesthetic and you will be allowed home on the same day as the operation.

Regular check ups will be required following the operation to check that the procedure has been successful and as with all procedures strenuous exercise is advised against in the hours following the local anaesthetic.

Some discomfort and swelling may be experienced after the procedure but by simply using over the counter painkillers or ice onto the swollen area, the pain and swelling should reduce.

It is important to discuss any questions with your consultant prior to any procedure.

If you are paying for your own treatment all costs will be discussed and explained prior to any treatment taking place. This will be confirmed in writing along with any surgeon fees, anaesthetist fees and hospital charges prior to admission.
