Breast Reduction (Gynaecomastia male)

Breast reduction in males is becoming more and more popular. Patients should feel comfortable in discussing their thoughts and ideas with the consultants who have extensive experience in this delicate area.

This problem occurs when males have experienced a dramatic weight loss or quite simply due to the ageing process.

Although the end result of the surgery, where the excess breast tissue is removed to leave a more sculptured chest, is extremely tempting for many males in this position, careful consideration must be given before deciding on any surgery.

Our consultants will be happy to answer any questions you may have prior to the treatment and put your mind at rest with any worries.

The consultant will make a small, neat cut under the arm or around the nipple and from here remove any excess fatty tissue and sagging skin before applying stitches to the area. The operation will be performed under a general anaesthetic.

Patients will on occasions be allowed home on the day of the operation whilst other will spend the night in the hospital. As the operation has been performed under a general anaesthetic you will have to organise to be picked up from the hospital by a family member or friend.

We would advise that no strenuous exercise is undertaken for at least a couple of weeks or until the swelling has worn off giving the body time to get used to the change.

If you are paying for your own treatment all costs will be discussed and explained prior to any treatment taking place. This will be confirmed in writing along with any surgeon fees, anaesthetist fees and hospital charges prior to admission.
