Radiology is a branch of medicine that uses imaging technology to diagnose and treat disease.

Radiology may be divided into two different areas, diagnostic radiology and interventional radiology.

Our consultants who specialise in radiology are called radiologists.

Diagnostic radiology helps our team see structures inside your body using diagnostic imaging, our radiologists can often:

  • Check for different illnesses such as some forms of cancer and heart disease
  • Diagnose the cause of your symptoms
  • Check how any treatment if progressing.

Some examples of diagnostic radiology exams include:

  • CT and CAT scan
  • MRI scan
  • Mammograp

  • X-rays
  • Ultrasound

Interventional radiology use  imaging such as CT, ultrasound, MRI and fluoroscopy to help guide procedures. This form of imaging if helpful when inserting catheters, small instruments and wires into your body, allowing for smaller incisions to be made in some cases.

Interventional radiology allows the consultant to diagnose and treat conditions without the need for inserting a scope or camera into your body or through open surgery.

This form of radiology is often used in the treatment of cancers, tumors, blockages in the veins or arteries or liver and kidney problems as examples.

There will be no requirement in the vast majority of cases to stay overnight in the hospital after this type of procedure. .

Some examples of interventional radiology procedures include:

  • Angioplasty and angiography
